Saturday the Thirtieth - the end!

Well, I did it, I finished BEDA without skipping a single day! Congratulations to me.

On the one hand, I am proud of myself for finding time every day for the last month to write - even if some, if not most, of it turned out to be complete and utter rubbish. Doing this everyday, I did learn a little about patience and perseverance. And some other things beginning with P.

On the other foot, I do feel like my creativity suffered, being "forced" to write something everyday. Plus there were some days this month that I wouldn't have even put the laptop on if it wasn't for BEDA.

So overall, I would say that I am glad I completed BEDA for the first time but I'm not sure I will do it again. I'd prefer to write when I feel inspired and end up with something really good (hopefully). It will feel a little weird tomorrow to not have to remember to blog before I go to bed but I'm glad it's over.

So Blog, I have had a good April, writing everyday so that you can experience it with me. And I will see you soon*, in May!

*Saying that, I will probably blog tomorrow or the next day to talk about Doctor Who, depending on how I feel about tonight's episode. So, see you then!

Friday Twenty-Ninth - Royal Wedding

Yes, it was the Royal Wedding today, just in case you've been living in a cave the last few months and hadn't heard. Since the engagement announcement, I was happy for them but on a personal level, I wasn't all that fussed. However, this morning, I was clued to the TV from 8 until half 1, watching the guests arrive, the crowds, the service, the procession and the balcony. I have to admit, parts were dry and a little bit boring, but Kate, or rather Catherine, looked beautiful in her dress and the Prince's looked handsome in their uniforms. Poor William looked nervous in the car from Clarence House to Westminster but when Kate walked up the aisle and he turned to her, I saw him mouth "you're beautiful" to her and she just glowed. It was adorable!

Maybe it's just the romantic in me but I was really happy for both of them, smiling and holding hands as they came out of the Abbey.

And the balcony. It's become a sort of tradition for the wedding party to come out onto the balcony of Buckingham Palace and they were ... well, rumours may not be the right word, but chances were that the couple would have their first public kiss as a married couple on the balcony. And ... yep, you guessed it; they did! The cheer in the crowds was amazing.

It's not just that they are my monarchy. In the world we live in now, with all our technological advances but also the terror, fear and war, this was just what we needed. A reminder of what the world can accomplish, that it is beautiful. And you know what? For one of the first times, today I felt proud to be British.

Thursday Twenty-Eighth - genius? I think not!

Hey guys. I just finished taking the Eureka Aptitude test, from the TV show 'A Town Called Eureka' - check it out, it's amazing. Anyway, I was looking up when the new episodes start (which I couldn't find by the way) and found this quiz. It's basically a 20 question IQ test. It has questions on Shakespeare, architecture, circles and Lord of the Flies.

Anyway, check it out:

You scored 10 out of 20.
You're no genius... yet! Why not give it another go and see if you can come top of the class and join the geniuses of Eureka!

Pretty good, huh? I mean, I cheated a little bit on some of them; who is supposed to know the name of 17th century headdress? But I was equally impressed that I remembered some stuff from GCSE Biology! I was so sure I had repressed all that!

So, here, have the linky-thingy:
http://www.syfy.co.uk/quiz/eureka-aptitude-test

Try it out! Seriously, it took me, like, 15 minutes and that's including me searching Google. Let me know how you did! See you tomorrow.

Wednesday Twenty-Seventh - The Golden Trio

Short one again, sorry about that. It's the last few days of the month and I am running out of steam, not to mention the pounding headache I've had all day.

So, let's just put another polyvore set up, yeah? This one I am actually extremely proud of. What do you think?

Tuesday Twenty-Sixth - Halo

Hey, no time to talk. I've been feeling a little better, I took some foul-tasting medicine last night to help me sleep and woke up feeling pretty good, considering.

I spent this morning watching TV (Glee specifically) and trying to do some work but failing because I couldn't breathe due to my nose. Hey, I think that's a legitimate reason!

Anyway, I can't talk right now because my boyfriend has finally convinced me to play on his Xbox, so right now I am getting my butt kicked on Halo Reach. It's making my boyfriend laugh anyway, probably because I suck and yell at the TV.

As my boyfriend has pointed, I don't suck because I haven't died yet.

So, I'm gonna go back to Halo, see you tomorrow!

Monday Twenty-fifth - N.C.I.S

I did just write out an entire blog post but then accidently deleted it when I got pissy with the computer. Since I can't be bothered to write it all out again, here, have a picture from my polyvore account (go look it up, I cba to explain right now):

Sunday Twenty-Fourth - chocolate and the Doctor

Everyone having a good Easter Sunday so far? I'm assuming that's a yes. Good stuff.

Despite being nineteen and not having anyone in the house that's under the age of 15, we had an Easter egg hunt this morning. It was really fun. We nearly lost one, as the Easter bunny forgot where he put the last little one but it was discovered in the sitting room just before lunch. Anyway, I now have A LOT of chocolate. I'm probably still going to be eating it at Halloween!*

So, what did you guys think of Doctor Who last night? Spoiler alert by the way.

Although I was pretty confused and all about the astronaut at the beginning and the mindf*ck with the Doctor's "death", I really liked it. Hopefully, I'll like it more when I understand it after next weeks episode because I really hate cliffhangers.

Since I need to leave for my grandparents house for another egg hunt in about fifteen minutes, I will quickly list my thoughts for you:

  • River kind of annoyed me when she was being all high and mighty about spoilers and timelines
  • I did pick up on the Doctor's age inconsistency
  • I guessed that Amy was pregnant, then wasn't sure because River said she felt sick too, then knew Amy was pregnant anyway
  • my boyfriend thought Amy would say it was the Doctor's but I shushed him quickly
  • the girl's voice was a little bit creepy and I so did not expect her to be in the astronaut suit
  • I am assuming that the alien is The Silence - also, he looked like a dementor in the bathroom scene
  • Rory was a little bit too wimpy at the beginning but then I warmed up to him, even though this forgetfulness is really starting to creep me out
  • Anyone else recognise the half-way built Tardis from 'The Lodger' in the tunnels?
  • I can't believe Amy shot her! I refuse to believe Amy shot her and actually killed her!
Ok, I think that's about it. It is now time for more chocolate and tea. See you tomorrow!

*Not likely though. I am a pig.

Saturday the Twenty-third - Who!

The Saturday between Good Friday and Easter Sunday. This Saturday (so far) has been spent eating ice cream and complaining about hayfever. However, to nerds, it is not just another Saturday. IT IS THE RETURN OF DOCTOR WHO!!!!!!! Soooo ridiculous excited!

As I am pretty damn stubborn and inpatient, I have been looking for spoilers on the BBC website - I refuse to believe most forums as it is usually pure speculation. However, thanks to Radio Times's interview with Stephen Moffat, I now know that the first two episodes contain Nixon, The Silence, an astronaut and the world's creepiest little alien guy I have ever seen. I also know that the cliffhanger of the first half will explain who River Song is.

On the subject of River, I am a little split over her. I liked her when she first turned up - kind of. She both annoyed and intrigued me. And I am aware that many fans are fed up with her because it is being dragged on too long. I do kind of agree with that; the character that the Doctor himself didn't know or understand was mystifying but the storyline has been dragged on for far too long, and I fear, allowing speculation to ruin the mystery. That said, with the end in sight, I am looking forward to finding out the truth.

Well, my nose and throat are hurting me again so I am going to go get some more ice cream ... to sooth it of course. The fact that it is cooling me down from the current 27 degrees (C by the way) is a bonus. See you tomorrow!

Friday Twenty-second - sleepover tales

A group of nineteen year old's having a sleepover? Sad, right? Wrong. Well no, probably right but we did it anyway!

Yesterday I told you I would hopefully have some interesting stories to tell. Well, I do but I'm probably not going to tell them all a) because this is the internet and b) I have a headache and can't be bothered. On the note, let's begin.

Yesterday afternoon I went round my friend Rose's house for dinner, my three other friends turning up later in the evening. We watched some Merlin, Doctor Who, ate pizza and strawberry laces and generally caught up, as we hadn't seen one another in about a month.

One highlight of the evening with Alex making up some rules for a Doctor Who drinking game. (Notes: Alex is a boy but hangs out with us so much he's practically one of the girls and in England we can legally drink at 18) We watched an old episode, one with the seventh Doctor and Ace, which was really good. But, I got too caught up in the story and therefore missed all the cues, such as yelling "drop down and give me twenty" when the fitness instructor came on screen and standing up and pretend-tipping a hat when the Doctor did it. This led to me drinking my drink way too quickly and giving up within about 15 minutes (I'm a bit of a sore loser). It was really funny though.

This morning, I was awake way too early because of my stupid body clock always waking me up at 7, so I was fussing the cats for an hour while waiting for everyone else to wake up - then I gave up and got myself breakfast. Jordi is not a morning person and was extremely grumpy when I woke her up climbing over her to get to the door. She and Alex had a pillow fight because... well, who knows? Probably because Alex was trying to wake her up.

It has been another lovely and ridiculously hot, sunny day today so we spent the morning in the park on the swings and playing badminton - badly. We ate Fabs and more pizza, and watched National Treasure 2. It was a good sleepover.

Now, I am home, I am trying not to fall asleep and I am suffering from light hayfever. But now I must go, I am going to watch Angel that I missed this morning. So, until tomorrow!

Thursday 21 April 2011

Thursday Twenty-first - fail

Good morning Blog! This post will find you earlier in the day than normal as I feel I will not be able to get to a computer, let alone post anything later today. I have a sleepover to get to, because that is what cool kids do.

Anyway, as it isn't even lunchtime over here, I have very little to say about my day so far. Not that it is usually gripping tales anyway, but still!

I am so bored, I am searching Google for blog ideas! And I have to say, most of them are rubbish. Check this out: Write a funny post. Wow, helpful! Yeah, whatever.

What interesting things have happened in my life recently? Well, I turned the laptop on this morning and found 25 emails, all from facebook, detailing an argument my friends were having on a private message. Yeah, that wasn't that interesting, just kind of annoying. Ooh, well it's the 21st today, yeah? So that means it is my *counts on fingers* 3 years, 11 months anniversary with my boyfriend. You know what that means? Next month it will be 3 years, 12 months! Or, better yet, 4 years! Yeah, I think that second one makes more sense.

Ok then. This has been a fail of a post. Hopefully, I will have some interesting stories to tell tomorrow about what we end up doing tonight. Until next time!

Wednesday 20 April 2011

Wednesday Twentieth - Goodbye Sarah Jane

Hey there Blog. This will probably end up as a really short post, as I am kind of tired and don't want to be on the laptop too long.

It's been another hot, sunny day down here, which means I didn't move too much. I did some work on my essay due after Easter, watched some TV, read down in the summer house and watched some more TV with my boyfriend.

The one thing I do want to talk about is Elizabeth Sladen. You may or may not know that she has died recently, in the last twenty-four hours. I found out this morning. She is most known for playing Sarah Jane Smith from Doctor Who and Sarah Jane Adventures. I adore her. I fell in love with her when she came back on 'School Reunion', then I watched her on Sarah Jane Adventures. She is/was an amazing actress and will be missed terribly by her friends, family and fans.

Goodbye Sarah Jane Smith. We'll miss you <3

Tuesday Nineteenth - sun, sun, sun!

Today has been the sort of day where I really don't want to be sat in front of a laptop. But, I promised to myself and to you, Blog, that I would complete my first BEDA successfully. That said, this will be an incredibly short post.

It has been a good day. I have been fairly busy and/or active today, helping my mother food shopping, vacuuming the house and walking into town. I spent the afternoon watching 'Iron Man' with my boyfriend, nomming on Refresher ice lollies.

Another sunny day in England. This of course means that my boyfriend (and my itchy legs) complained about the heat. For some time over lunch, I sat the garden watching Dad and little brother painting the fence and tickling the cat who was fighting with the bamboo. As I said, good day.

As I am tired and in need of food, I leave you with a picture from A Very Potter Sequel (which I adore by the way).

Monday 18 April 2011

Monday Eighteenth - travelling

Yet again, I blog from my boyfriend's bed while he sits on the computer. Only this time I have the added bonus of Red Dwarf on the Xbox.

Since I have minimal to talk about since the only exciting thing I have done today is watch 'Date Night', I am going to try another day task. Ah, here we go, day 13: Somewhere you'd like to move or visit.

I have always liked the idea of travelling around the world, seeing new places and visiting the wonders in both my own and other countries. Ideally, a few places I would love to go to are New York, Egypt, Hawaii, Paris, Australia, Berlin, Montreal, Venice, Washington DC, London, Athens, and...  God, loads more!

Growing up in a family that goes on holiday every summer and Easter, I am used to visiting castles, houses and gardens, old family mansions and dead famous people's homes. But that was as a family, with Dad wandering off by himself, Mum worrying over food and sun screen, and little brother getting lost. I dream of travelling with my friends or with my boyfriend, discovering this places by myself, not because Mum spotted a nice looking house in the guidebook.

Lately, I am also dreaming of driving around England with my boyfriend, going to places in my own country I haven't been before, like Devon and parts of Kent and up north. Of course, I can't drive and neither can he, so that dream will have to wait for a few years.

After university, I am thinking of travelling. After all that studying and exams and essays, I will need to shed my responsibilities and do what I want... right, I'd better start saving now!

Sunday 17 April 2011

Sunday Seventeenth - not so lazy Sunday

Hello Blog. It has been a fairly eventful Sunday and by that I mean I actually left the house.

This morning, my grandparents came over for a visit, which was nice as I haven't seen them in a few weeks. This afternoon I kind of guilt-tripped my boyfriend into coming outside with me. You see, he is a computer nerd and burns in the sun if he steps out of the front door. But I complained enough that we met up with his friend Dave and went into town and bought some food (and ice lollies) and sat in the park. By chance, we bumped into some of my friends from sixth form and they tagged along with us. We sat in the park for three hours; I have only just come back for dinner.

The thing with my friends is that we are all slightly or really insane, which makes public outings both hilarious and embarrassing. Alex and Dave had a fight with plastic bottles, the boys made obscene* comments at other people, usually ones who couldn't hear us, and we all had about 4 Fab's each. We watched a group of teenage boys play Frisbee really bad at the other end of the park. We watched three kids kick a football into a tree and then fail at climbing to get it - that was hilarious.

All in all, a good day. It made me really miss my friends as they have bogged off to all corners of the country, but it's Easter holidays so they have come home, hopefully meaning I can meet up with them in the next few weeks.

Until tomorrow.

*and by that I mean swear words or just random stuff really loudly.

Saturday Sixteenth - horoscopes and zodiacs

I have a little thing for horoscopes. I don't completely abide by their wisdom, word for word, I just like reading them. Sometimes they are reasonably accurate, in a vague kind of way, sometimes they are hilariously wrong.

Today's horoscope for me, courtsey of Daily Horoscopes dot com, is thus:
Your physical appearance seems to have been buffed or polished overnight. Complements are many today and people are not quite sure what, if anything, you have changed. Your energies are high and you look forward to seeing particular people or just being where you are in your life at this time. You could be most persuasive with others because your thinking is of the highest form and you will not have to audit what you say. This situation is a natural for self-expression and when it is your turn to speak many people will listen. Outer circumstances tend to work in your favor. Take advantage of the gradual metamorphosis that is taking place within you now and get to know the adventurer and achiever that is inside of you.
Now, overnight I have broken out in spots/bitemarks on my legs. Check to physical appearance changing. Compliments? Meh, not really. High energy? I am exhausted and the only energetic thing I did today was walk from my boyfriend's house to mine - 15 minutes. Look forward to seeing people? Yeah, my family came home from holiday today, it was nice to have them back. Thinking of the highest form? I have literally no idea what this person is on about! Self-expression? The most self-expressing thing I have done today is this: write in my blog!

So, yeah, some right, some wrong, some waaaay off!

Another thing is your zodiac. I am a Libra and for the most part, what they say about me is fairly true. Apparently, Libra's are dipolmatic, graceful, peaceful, hospitable, superficial, indecisive and unreliable. Now, as a Libra, I can say that I am hardly graceful and reasonably dipolmatic as I hate arguments. I wouldn't say I am unreliable, I think I am quite reliable, when I remember to be! And indecisive? If I was indecisive, I would never have asked out my boyfriend!

Some of Libra's traits that apply to me are being social, a little bit lazy, independant, likes the unusual, good instincts, have a hard time saying 'no' to people, being too nice and creatively intelligent.

So, what you do think of horoscopes and zodiac predictions Blog? And readers, if there are any? Until next time! Well, tomorrow.

Friday 15 April 2011

Friday Fifteenth - five hot guys

G'day Blog! It was the last day of university for me today. Whoo, three weeks off for Easter! I only went in for a lecture and a tutorial. So on the plus side, I got 63% on the essay, on the negative the lecture was in fact mostly pointless. On the other plus side, I signed up for a field trip in a months time to an old theatre. Excited already!

My boyfriend's friend has just turned up therefore this post will be getting cut short. Let's do another random day, shall we? Day 23: list five famous guys you find attractive. Easy peasy!

  1. David Tennant
  2. David Boreanaz
  3. Cory Monteith
  4. Robert Downey Jr.
  5. Michael Weatherly
See you tomorrow!

Thursday 14 April 2011

Thursday Fourteenth - 6 facts

Today has been a boring day, as I did not have to go onto campus at all today! Yay!

So instead of talking to you about my day, which was really quite boring and normal, I am going to do a random '30 days' day: Write 6 interesting facts about yourself. So, here goes.

  1. I have only recently become a certified nerd. I have been an avid reader of Harry Potter since my eleventh birthday and fan of Doctor Who since 2005 but it has only been in the last few years that I have gained the confidence to be who I am. I also like Red Dwarf, Pokemon, YA books and a few other not-so-nerdy type things like the Morganville series and Glee.
  2. I have a Gothic mind set. Graveyard poetry appeals to me. I adore dark romance, gothic architecture, I am ridiculously open-minded, I'm drawn to Wicca etc. I don't think you have to dress all in black lace and purple ribbon (even though I love that clothing) or to like all the post-punk goth music to be Goth. That said, I hate labels and will not label myself as a Goth, especially since I don't look like one.
  3. In spite of this, I am a giggly and hugging type of person.
  4. I have an idiot for a boyfriend. No real need for an explanation. But I do still love him.
  5. I feel more at home writing than I do talking some times. With writing, I have a chance to stop and think about what I want to have floating on the page. With talking, my mouth runs ahead of my head and I end up making a fool of myself. Which, not so surprisingly, happens quite often.
  6. I love watching crime drama but I can't read it. Totally addicted to NCIS and Bones but for the life of me, I cannot read crime novels. My parents love them, so they are always around the house. Maybe I'll try again over the summer...
So, that was fun! It actually took me way longer to think of those, which probably shows how limited the interesting is in my life. Oh well. See you tomorrow!

Wednesday 13 April 2011

Wednesday Thirteenth - numerous fails

I am extremely tired. It's been one of those days where nothing seems to go right and it makes you think that you shouldn't have bothered getting out of bed in the morning. In summary, I had a lecture and two seminars today. The lecture wasn't that bad, just a little boring as I have minimal interest in the play we are studying. I snuck out the back early for a tutorial to get an essay back. I shouldn't have bothered. My tutor didn't have my essay, another tutor has probably got it in his lot of essays. Fail number one.

Fail number two was getting a chicken caesar wrap with bacon in it. I hate bacon. It tasted disgusting. On the plus side, I did also get a bag of giant chocolate buttons. Yummy.

I then had a seminar. In those two hours, all we did was discuss the six units we have already studied. Fail number three.

Last seminar of the day was only an hour long but it didn't finish until 6. Four of us, including me, turned up. It was a complete waste of time, hardly anyone talked, our tutor refused to let us go early. Fail number four.

Universal fail was the weather, as it has been raining all afternoon. This, along with the bitterly cold wind, has not helped my mood.

It has not been the best of days and I am incredibly glad I am home now and can go to bed. Good night.

Tuesday 12 April 2011

Tuesday Twelfth - do you know what feedback is?

Hello there Blog. I am sat on the bed, eating apple crumble and custard, so you will have to excuse for a minute.

*five minutes later*

Still here? Awesome. Ok, today's blog is going to be about the lecture I had this afternoon. As my history seminar was cancelled because my tutor is in Rome (how dare she!), I had a late start and was only on campus for an hour. That hour was spent being lectured about feedback. Yes, feedback, you know the comments on a marked essay. Apparently, we all needed to be told to read and actually take on board the comments our tutors give us. Well, duh! But that wasn't enough. The lecturer this afternoon talked to us like we were five and completely stupid. I mean, I know some people don't, or at least appear not to, take the tutor's advice but usually, it's because we can't read their bloody handwriting! Seriously, you teach English! Surely you should be able to write it legibly! You let me know if I'm expecting too much!

In some respects, it was good that the lecturer treated us like idiots, because a lot of us (or them, I try not to associate myself with them) are a little thick to not write essays properly in the first place. At the beginning, she gave us some objectives and they all trickled down to this: to improve essay writing and knowledge. No sh*t, Sherlock! What else could we possibly expect from a lecture entitled "Using feedback to improve your essays"?

One comment she said reminded me of A-level when I studied psychology. She said it was difficult for a person to change their minds. Well, in psychology, we learned that was because people are stupid and stubborn. Yeah, I mean people, not a person - you know, like at the beginning of Men in Black.

One last thing she taught us was a phrase circulating between our university's tutors. If a quote has not been explained and just left hanging, it is called 'a dead kitten'. Yeah, don't really know why. But she tried the guilt trip: "If you leave a quotation hanging in your essay, you just killed a kitten." Well thanks for that!

OK, guys, this has been all for today. I'm feeling in the mood for Ice Age 3 so I'll see you tomorrow!

Monday 11 April 2011

Monday Eleventh - online stuff

Another Monday and for once, I actually had to go onto campus. This means I am extremely confused as to what day it is and I feel like my weekend has been shortened. Anyway, I went in today for a lecture type thing about next year's modules. Almost a waste of time and money, as most of the information was already on the university website, but ats least it has confirmed my choices.

In another news... actually, I don't have another news. *stares at flashing cursor for 5 minutes*

Let's try a list, shall we?

Favourite things to do online (in no particular order):

  1. Facebook
  2. Blogger
  3. Polyvore
  4. YouTube
  5. Minecraft
  6. Fanfiction
  7. Leaky Cauldron
  8. BBC iplayer
  9. Doctor Who website
  10. Gaia

Now, I must go as my boyfriend's family and I are going to sit down and watch HP and the Deathly Hallows part one. See you tomorrow!

Sunday 10 April 2011

Sunday Tenth - Frankie

Hello, hello! It is currently 4 o'clock over in good ol' England and I have spent the day doing practically nothing. Really, the most productive thing I've done today is walk over to my boyfriend's house.

So... what to write about today? Well, my family have gone on holiday this week, leaving me behind as I still have a week of university left. So, I have essentially moved in with my boyfriend for the week.

Oh, I know a fun little topic I can blabber on about. We have a motorcaravan. We have had a motorcaravan for the last ten years. An interesting little fact about my family life ... kind of. Well, it is for me, especially to see my friend's reactions when I tell them. Some are interested, as it is a little bit weird to have a motorcaravan - a caravan, sure. Or to stay in a hotel or a tent. Most are surprised, but this is usually because I introduce our motorcaravan by name: Frankie. Some reactions include: "Oh, I thought you had a new family member!" and "That is really weird, to name it." Well, that is due to it's brand name, Frankia. We are a very loving family to name our vehicles. Or, at least, that's what we tell ourselves.

Anyway! Before I freak anyone out even more with my family's ... different sense of humour, I think I will sign off now. But before I go, I would like to know about my readers' holiday experiences: hotel? tent? caravan? chalet?

See you tomorrow!

Saturday 9 April 2011

Saturday Ninth - Lear

Good evening. I am tired. It's been a long day so this post will be short and lazy.

Last night I slept over my boyfriend's. It was fun but it made this morning feel like Sunday. I had a lazy morning, in which I read more of The Host. I went home to have lunch and get changed. Mum and I walked round the train station and caught a train to Bath. We did some shopping and met my grandmother and my cousin before going to the theatre.

(And here is where I grow too lazy for full sentences)

King Lear:
  • had no expections as didn't know what it was about
  • Derek Jacobi played the King - amazing actor
  • second half kind of scared me - eyes being cut out on stage can do that to a girl
  • overall, really impressed
  • didn't think I would like it but I am extremely glad I saw it now
And now I am going to watch Bones. Good night.

Friday 8 April 2011

Friday Eighth - scandal

Good evening, Blog. It has been another warm and sunny day, hence the denim shorts and tank top I am currently sporting. The subject of today's BEDA entry is my lecture this afternoon.

One of my module's for this year is entitled 'Scandal and Sobriety: the Enlightenment to the Victorians' and that is what I had today. As it is ending the year, we are on our last text (The Importance of Being Earnest, if anyone is interested) and we have been discussing Fin de Siecle, or end of the century. Bill, my tutor and lecturer on the subject, spent the hour this afternoon telling us about 19th century medicine, gender and how it relates to the play. It was mostly a background knowledge kind of lecture, so I was zoning in and out (I know, bad student!). But I did learn about 19th century medicine and their preconceptions on the human body, particularly the differences between male and female. Apparently, "self-abuse" (and I think we all know what I'm talking about here - if you don't, you are probably too young to be reading this) was not only scandalous that it was morally wrong, it was pleasure for pleasures sake. Doctors in the 1890's thought that the blood went through some kind of conversion in the body that turned it into semen. There was also a kind of ratio that 7 ounces of blood made about 3 ounces of semen. Bill's phrase was 'an armful gives a handful'. Therefore, when a man was ... self-abusing, he was wasting blood. They also thought that if a man did this too much, he would lose too much blood and make him feel like a woman on her period.

Yeah ... this is the fun stuff we learn at my university.

Good night and see you tomorrow.

Thursday 7 April 2011

Thursday Seventh - chocolate and ice lollies

Good evening Blog! It has been a gloriously sunny day in my part of the country, which means I walked around today in shorts, tank top and dolly shoes. Good stuff.

As I only had a lecture in the afternoon, my Mummy took me shopping in our Outlet Village. It was really nice to spend the morning with her, as I even though I still live at home, I don't spend that much time with my family due to my workload. I didn't buy anything, as I have no money to spend, but Mum did. We went to Costa, a coffe shop, for elevenses and Mum automatically asked for a chocolate twist. She has given up chocolate for lent. It took her moment, then she requested a blueberry muffin instead. I sighed at her forgetfulness but it has made me realise how I don't really think about what I eat. I really should pay attention to what food goes in my mouth, whether or not it's healthy or it will kill me quicker, but I don't. As a faily slim girl without any effort, I have grown lazy. (I'm going to stop myself here, otherwise I will go into a full blown healthy-eating rant) However, no matter how many times Dad has a go at me for not exercising enough, I will never give up my chocolate like my mother foolishly has.

To other news, my lecture this afternoon on the Cable Street Riot wasn't that fun. Not many people turned up and considering the lecture hall seats just over a hundred, it was entertaining to say that least to see only about 20 of us who actually bothered to show up. I can't really blame the people who didn't; the weather has been beautiful today around here and given the choice, I would have much rather been sunbathing.

To end a lovely day of out-of-season weather, my friend Sarah and I went into town after the lecture and got an ice lolly each. I got a few funny looks as I licked it on the train but it was worth it!

Wednesday Sixth - fruit pastels

Short post today, as I am tired. I have been on campus all afternoon, although I didn't do anything too strenuous. I had a tutorial to get an essay back and I got 53%. It's still a pass but I knew I hadn't done well when I was writing it. Oh well, thank God first year doesn't count!

We had our seminar outside today. That was nice, apart fom getting attacked by flies. The sun was out, the wind was strong (which did not agree with my skirt) and it could not be more different than yesterday. As my friend Charlotte said "It just shows what a difference a day makes." She could not be more right.

...

I literally have nothing else to say. I'm sorry, Blog. I am still getting the hang of BEDA, so hopefully I will think of some more interesting topics to write about rather than my day.

One thing I do want to say though: Sophie, enjoy your fruit pastels! Love you and am extremely jealous of your sweets.

See you tomorrow, Blog!

Tuesday Fifth - university life

Just the fact that I am here writing, when I had university today, says something about my dedication. Or at least it says something about my stubbornness.

Yes, anyway, I had university today. I had to be on campus for nine, which of course means I will be there at twenty to. I don't mind Tuesdays because I finish quite early but I also start early. I don't live on campus. I don't even live in the same city. I catch a fifeteen minute train from my town one stop over, then wait ten minutes, get on the bus and then half an hour later, I am finally on campus. Explaining this makes me realise how much of my time I spend travelling. And it's not even the fun kind, where I get to look forward to a new and/or exotic place to visit. No, I just arrive in the middle of no where, where our campus is located between fields. Fun times, huh?

Now, because I have nothing else to talk about, I am going to go through my day. Interesting stuff ahead, guys! Not.

From 9 til 11, I had a history seminar (I take history in this first year as a secondary subject - I'm droping it next year to focus on English) in which I sat and took notes while the third group in our class presented their presentation. This week it was the East End. On the plus, I did learn alot about organised crime and realised i can't do a cockney accent. Then I had a two hour break, in which my friend Sarah and I did random quiz's on facebook and then had lunch. At 1, I had an English lecture, in which I nearly fell asleep because they blabbed on about Ulysses which is quite possibly the world's most boring yet enlightening book. To summerise, it is about one day in Dublin. Yes, one day, where some guy talks to another guy who's wife is having an affair. And that is the most interesting plot line. The rest is just some people shaving and walking to work and sitting in an outhouse. Gripping stuff, clearly.

Right now, it is only ten past 4, I've been home for an hour and I am already bored enough to think about dinner time. Nah, I will sit on my bed, snacking on Dolly Mix and go play Minecraft. See you tomorrow!

Monday Fourth - dead mouth

Good morrow Blog! Actually, over here it's twenty to 1, but I don't know what 'afternoon' is in old English/moron speak.

Well, it's Monday. The beginning of a new week, start of the working week, often the most depressing day of the week. For me, it is still the weekend, as I have Monday's off from university. Which is nice. But this Monday is relatively packed - as in, I have left the house. Right now, I am sat on my boyfriend's bed, watching him play on the Xbox (again) and waiting for feeling to return to my mouth. Yeah, I've been to the dentist this morning for a filling, so one side of my mouth is completely numb. At lunchtime. Although my dentist said I could eat on the filling straight away, she did advise to wait for feeling to come back. Which I am doing, because if I try and eat, I just know it will end up dribbling out the corner of my mouth and I won't be able to tell. Thanks, but no thanks; my life is full of embarrassing moments without your help, dead mouth!

The only other thing of interest today is that Jordan (the boyfriend) and I have to walk and meet his little brother from school later today. Yeah, my life is just chocked full of amazing events. Not. On the positive, there is a high chance Jordan can buy me some food when we walk through the high street on the way back. Which, now that I think about, considering we will stop in Humbugs, the sweet shop, kind of defeats the point of going to the dentist this morning. Ah well, my life is full of contradictions like that. That's what makes it so fun!

So, that's pretty much it for now. Aren't you happy, Blog, that I am doing BEDA this year? Otherwise, you would never get this sort of opportunity to see all the interesting things that happen in my life! Alright you can stop laughing now.

See you tomorrow!

Sunday 3rd - Mothers Day

Good morning and happy Mothers Day, English people! I say that because I believe America has a different day for Mothers Day because ... they can.

It is currently 10:55am and I have already given my mummy her present, watched an episode of NCIS and Bones, read half of my book and edited and uploaded a video to YouTube! What an exciting life I lead! Alright, you can stop with the raised eyebrows and giggles. This Mothering Sunday is to be spent quietly with my family. Essentially the only thing we have planned is that I am cooking lunch, which should be interesting (and possibly a disaster). But, if it all fails, I can say with confidence that dessert will be a success. This is because it is chocolate pudding and it is in its very nature to be messy. If puddings could have a nature that is.

According to Google, it is also the 119th anniversary of the first documented ice cream sundae. Now, if that is not a speical occassion, I don't know what is! Apparently the celebration of an ice cream dessert with sprinkles on warrents its own Google doodle, but hey, I've seen weirder ones. Anyway, it appears that the ice cream sundae came into excistence when Chester Platt served church minister John Scott some ice cream at his pharmacy’s day and night “Soda Fountain”.

While searching for more information, I have just encountered the official website for the ice cream sundae, which is apparently "dedicated to supporting and respecting the convivial traditions of the fountain and celebrating the pleasures of the Ice Cream Sundae in everyday life." Now that is, umm... dedication. With a dash of creepy.

Now, I believe it is time to sign off, as I need to figure out when to put the gammon in the oven so we can eat on time. See you tomorrow!

Saturday the Second - Loser!

The second - all good so far!

While I am in the mood to write, I do not have a lot on my mind to write about, so unfortunately this will be a short post.

Saturday mornings for me are usually for uni work and spending time with my family before I go to my boyfriend's for the evening. This Saturday morning I am already at my boyfriend's as I spent the night last night. The consequence of this is that as I write, I am watching him yell and swear at the TV while he plays Battlefield on the Xbox.

"Do not mock the blog!" ~ the boyfriend has a limited respect for my internet usage.

Apologies, Blog, for this fail of a post; I don't seem to have anything monumental to write about at the moment. Tell you what, I will sign off with my favourite song of the last week: Glee's Loser Like Me.

First of April - introduction

B.E.D.A - Blog Every Day in April.

I have decided to try BEDA for the first time. This sort of thing, just like NaNoWriMo, has appealed to me for the last few years but I have never planned far enough ahead or been incredibly aware of it to be able to do anything about it.

So for the first of April, you, Blog, have not an April Fool, but a promise. As this is my first BEDA, I really want to do it well. However, this first one will be really short, as I only have half an hour before I have to leave for university. Instead, you have a hastily complied blog post of random ramblings because I have nothing to talk about as my day has only just begun.

It's Friday. For many, this is TGIF and this includes me. I do have university on a Friday but it's not that bad. I have a one hour seminar at 11 and a one hour lecture at 2. For the very observant among you, you may notice (or not, because I am running on English time and many of you are American) that I have to leave an hour and a half before I am due on campus. Why is this, you may ask? This is because I don't live on campus, I still live at home because my house is within a 30 mile radius of the university. While it does mean I don't have to worry about fending for myself, rent and searching for accomodation, it does mean that I live so far away from campus and my friends, which makes it annoying to travel and to go out. However, I have grown accustomed to it - mum still makes me a packed lunch, I don't have to pay rent and I don't get homesick, like a lot of my friends.

Anyway, this ends the first blog of BEDA. I wish everyone luck who is trying this year and I hope you can all do the same for me. See you tomorrow!
